Do you get embarrassed by your loved one with dementia in public? Do their unusual choices keep you from taking them out? My Mom used to yell, “Beep Beep!” at everyone in front of her shopping cart until they moved. People would be surprised when that happened.
I would wave to the startled person, or show I understood their being surprised. Sometimes I would say, “Hello! Hope you are having a great day”. If I was focused, I could usually interrupt the “beep beep” with a well timed question or tap on my Mom’s shoulder. Most people figured out what was going on and were really nice about it.
